Since 2022 a new in-house R&D laboratory has complemented our historic production of infusion and injectable solutions with a constant drive towards high-added-value technologies.
Since 2022 Galenica Senese has undergone a strategic turning point, setting up a new and modern in-house Formulation Research and Development Laboratory: the heart of the company's scientific innovation, integrating traditional pharmaceutical development with the exploration of new formulation frontiers.

Our model: three pillars
We actively collaborate with leading international institutes and with the most prestigious national universities — including the Universities of Siena, Florence and Venice. This global network constantly feeds our advanced training programmes, hosting experimental degree theses, industrial internships and research doctorates.
Thanks to the research projects submitted by our Research and Development team and admitted to public funding, we have significantly expanded our lines of activity and strengthened research into frontier solutions such as the Nanosalus project.
The strategic partnership with Ca' Foscari University of Venice: the initiative combines academic research excellence with our industrial know-how to develop innovative, high-technology therapeutic systems for the biomedical and pharmaceutical sector. Leveraging the flexibility of our lipid formulation platform and the use of advanced microfluidic processes, we ensure maximum stability of the active ingredients, targeted release and perfect industrial scalability. This approach accelerates technology transfer from the laboratory to pilot production, enabling us to create customised solutions ready for clinical trials.
Industrial development and synergy with the University of Siena (UniSi): in parallel, the collaboration with the University of Siena focuses on the design and optimisation of advanced, intelligent vectors, engineered to deliver high stability and targeted release of the active ingredients directly at cellular level. Specifically, this activity applies our flexible, efficient technological platform to the industrial reformulation of a selection of first-line, critical and strategic antibiotics at European level, essential to countering antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The innovation developed in our laboratories aims to significantly enhance the therapeutic efficacy of these molecules and improve their safety profile, maximising the concentration of the active ingredient where it is needed and reducing its systemic side effects.
We work closely with Key Opinion Leaders and medical specialists who support our research, translating their clinical needs into innovative formulations. Active research streams include the study of formulations for inflammatory, infectious, oncological and degenerative conditions.
Our in-house R&D team has solid expertise in institutional scientific project design. We regularly write and submit high-impact research projects, obtaining significant grants and financial contributions from regional bodies (Regional Calls) and national bodies (MIMIT — the Italian Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy), a testament to the strategic value and scientific innovation of our industrial solutions.
